FIXING THE BARN

One of the last projects that Si Simons was formerly charged with accomplishing was to stabilize and renovate the physical structure of the barn at the Pipsico Scout Reservation.  The cost of this project is still unknown but varies on exactly what is done to this structure.  The first phase of the barn project will probably cost between $15,000 and $25,000.  Si unfortunately passed away on October 24, 2008 and thus left his last labor of love with the council in our good hands.  You can find more on Si both on this page and what we placed on our website at this location.

Stepping up to fill Si's big shoes are a lot of Si's friends.  Robbie Henderson has been named the chairman of the "Fix the Barn" project by the executive board of the council.  Robbie Henderson at 757-421-3637 (home) or Email: rahender@hotmail.com

Already a large amount of materials have been paid for, secured, and relocated to the barn.  During the week of December 8, 2008 we plan on doing some of the major concrete work that is necessary for shoring up the one wall at the barn.

The second phase is to decide exactly what the use of the barn will be over the next ten to fifteen years.  A committee is working on this phase right now.  At some point, we will be seeking your input as to what should be done.  Many different ideas have surfaced but in the end, we hope that we will be able to come to an agreement as to its best use.

This video is from June of 1999, when Si's last major project at camp was accomplished, the building of the Delta tower.  About half the units in the council donated materials towards this project.  Without unit and individual support it would have never happened.

Please note during the video towards the end, you will see how the lake looked prior to being destroyed three months later.  Also note, that there is no bridge on the road when you look down from the tower.  The bridge was put in after the lake washed out the earthen dam.  One can also note there are many additions and changes to the tower since that early construction, but this is what it looked like when it was first used in 1999.  And what was the camp fee in 99?  Well it was 99 dollars.
