Good luck to
all the packs and troops that are in the midst of their summertime Peer-to-Peer
recruiting programs. Ninety-eight years ago, Scouting in America did not become
the greatest of all youth movements due to some slick, highly orchestrated
membership campaign. No, the Spirit of Scouting spread rapidly and surely, like
wildfire, coast to coast, from one boy to the next boy, through action and
through deed, and mostly by word of mouth. Still today, the best possible
recruiter for Scouting is its active youth membership. No one can stir the
imagination of a boy better than a friend can stir it. No adult can describe the
fun and activities of a den meeting, or a week of day camp as well as a Cub
Scout can. No adult can express the enjoyment and challenge of practicing the
patrol method to a teenage boy better than a Boy Scout can.
To this end,
Tidewater Council has a Peer-to-Peer Recruiting Kit for each and every unit in
Kempsville District. Scouts who recruit new boys to Scouting will receive a
recruiter strip to be worn on their uniform, as well as a number of other
collectable incentives. These kits will be available at roundtable, and through
your unit commissioner. This is the best time of year to set up a Recruiter
Housewarming for your Pack or Troop. Give peer-to-peer recruiting a chance.
Please, allow your Scouts the opportunity to spread the great news about
Scouting to their friends and peers, as only they can.
