MAKE MEMBERSHIP JOB 1

Every boy deserves the chance to join Scouts, and the energy is there to make it happen.  Fall recruits will be scheduled throughout September.  If your unit has a membership plan in place and has dates and contacts ready for the fall, let the office know and the flyers will get printed.

The race is on to see which district can accomplish a GOOD recruit in every single elementary school first.

Put Chowanoc in the lead by getting your plan done early!

The job is done when EVERY boy is given opportunity, and every member has invited a buddy to join with him.

Congratulations to the following units that earned the

The following information will be provided throughout the year to help your unit do a "self evaluation" of its program and help each unit to prepare to qualify for and earn the 2008 Centennial Quality Unit Award.  Check out the following charts!

(A note about the highlight color coding:  Yellow/Gold is a good thing.  Red is an area that needs attention or corrective action.)

LEADER TRAINING STATUS per ScoutNET as of 4/17/08

If you have questions about the charts below or would like information about training, contact District Training Chairman Humphrey Minx at 965-3661 or e-mail him at hminx@aol.com

ON-LINE TRAINING IS S-O-O-O EASY TO DO

Go to www.tidewaterbsa.com and click on the "TRAINING" link.  Ba-boom!, you're there.  It only takes about 20-30 minutes to do the Fast Start and Youth Protection Training on-line.

Please use your Membership ID # when taking the on line training, doing so will ensure that your training records are updated immediately upon your completing any of the on line fast start training sessions.  Your Membership ID # is located at the bottom of your membership registration card.

EVERY leader should - needs to - is expected to complete Youth Protection Training.

“OPERATION VISINE”

On April 1, 2008, the Chowanoc District Training Committee began a two (2) month campaign called “Operation Visine” to, well, “get the red out.”

What is the purpose of this “Operation Visine” campaign?  As everyone can see in the direct contact leader training status charts that follow, there is far too much red – leaders that haven’t completed some or any of the basic training sessions that are required for them to be considered “trained” for the leadership position they hold in their unit.  Therefore, the purpose of this campaign will be to put an emphasis on “getting the red out” of the charts that follow by working closely with the leaders that haven’t completed the basic training for their leadership position.

There’s a saying that applies really well to this operation’s goal:  ‘How do you eat an elephant?” Answer: “One bite at a time.” The first phase or “bite” of this campaign should be the easiest and one that every leader can take on their own, at their pace, in the comfort of their home.  That is to complete (or in some cases, update) the Youth Protection Training session.

Youth Protection Training can be completed on line in about twenty minutes or so.  Of course, if the leader would rather come to an instructor lead Youth Protection Training session that takes around an hour and a half to conduct; that would be at some location outside of the leader’s home; at some arbitrarily selected date – that works too (now that may sound a bit sarcastic or cynical but, it is meant to highlight the fact that it is easier and faster to take Youth Protection Training on line).  However, it would seem that leaders would more likely have a twenty minute time slot to ensure the safety and well-being of the youth they lead (and themselves) rather than to have to figure out how to fit in a 1 ˝ hour training session plus driving time in their busy schedules to accomplish the same thing.

So, which group of direct contact leaders (Den Leaders & Assistant Den Leaders or Assistant Scoutmasters) will be the first to “get the red out” of the first column – Youth Protection Training?
