Spring Membership Drive and the Journey to Excellence

Scouting is a growth organization, we are always seeking to grow.  That means more youth in the program and more youth mean more youth are being instilled with the values that Scouting stands for.  In order to do so, we need each unit to plan to grow in membership.  One the criteria for Packs/Troops. Crews/Teams is to grow in size over last year.  The District has the same goal to grow the number of youth involved in Scouting.  Here is a snam shot of the district right now and its progress towards the mid-year goal.

Program Youth This Year Youth Last Year June Goal Difference
Cub Scouting 1,008 1,046 1083 -75
Boy Scouting 783 830 859 -76
Venturing 78 59 61 17
Total Traditional 1,869 1,935 2003 -134

If each Pack and Troop commits to recruiting at least 3 youth this spring we will be on goal to make the end of year goal.

Please remember that in the spring we are recruiting them into the program as if they had graduated the grade that they are currently in i.e.

Strawberry Festival

Along with beautiful beaches, Virginia Beach has miles and miles of beautiful farmland. We call this area Pungo and every year the Pungo Strawberry Festival is held on Memorial Day weekend. This year we are estimating attendance of 120,000 over the two day event. Not only does the Festival have all the strawberries you can eat offered in over 50 different ways, activities include a pie eating contest, strawberry bake-off, continuous entertainment on three stages, a parade, one of the largest carnivals on the east coast, livestock show and sale, a multi-million dollar military display, pig races, youth art show, and arts and craft booths.

The district will be hosting an information booth about Scouting at this year's event.  We need your help to man the booth, can you spare a couple of hours at this event?  Contact Ray Penland to sign up for a two hour slot.

Spring 2012 Camporee  "Burst to First"

What a great weekend to camp.  Twelve Troops and three Packs came out and had a great time at the Princess Anne First Camporee.  There were a total of 190 Scouts and Scouter in Rotary enjoying themselves.  Please thank Camporee Chair: David Strickland for planning this event. While the weather he ordered for Sunday was not nice, Saturday was great.  Every boy that came as a Second Class, finished the requirements for First Class and many of the boys who just crossed over are ready for Tenderfoot.  The Webelos had an opportunity to work on Readyman, Naturalist, Forester, and Outdoorsman.

Has your unit planned to attend the Fall Camporee the weekend of November 9-11?  We are just starting the planning of this event, but the suggested theme from the SPL conference at the Spring Camporee is Scouting History/Heritage.

Service Projects and the Journey to Excellence

Each unit is required to complete so many service projects in order to qualify as a Bronze, Silver or Gold award winning unit.  Most unit have completed a project in the last quarter but the problem is in documenting them on the JTE website.  Please log on and do this so your unit gets credit for the great things you are doing in your community.
